To workout or not to workout? That's not the question.

To do crunches? Now that's the question!

We all know that exercise and healthy eating (with plenty of fibre, of course) are essential for optimum health and fitness. As I ate half of a seriously chocolate-y brownie just now, I thought to myself, "Okay. Enjoy this now and do some extra crunches in my workout later!" But are those crunches worth the extra effort?

According to The Washington Post, the FDA has issued warning letters to eight surgical centers and a marketing firm in California for misleading advertisements promoting the Lap-Band, a stomach-restricting device used to treat obesity. 

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday that advertisements by the centers and a marketing firm, 1-800-GET-THIN, do not provide mandatory information about the risks and side effects of Lap-Band implantation. The stomach-restricting band— limits food intake, but can also cause irritation of the esophagus, infection, nausea and vomiting in some cases.

The FDA said print advertisements and billboards from the companies used large lettering for slogans like “Let your new life begin.” However, messages about the requirements and risks of the procedure “appear so small as to render the information illegible.” (it’s a billboard! Do we really want people reading fine print as they are driving?!)

In February, the FDA expanded approval for the Lap-Band to an additional 26 million American patients with a body mass index between 30 and 40 and one weight-related medical condition, such as diabetes or high blood pressure. That’s up from the roughly 15 million who were eligible under the previous criteria: a body mass index of 40 or higher, or 35 and higher with weight-related complications.

Given the fact that more than a third of all American adults are obese, I think there’s more that the FDA could be warning people about. How about adding a warning that eating the entire bag of fries will increase one’s thighs?

Julie Daniluk, registered nutritionist, shares her recipe for a berry delicious blueberry pie!

Nutritionist and host of Healthy Gourmet Julie Daniluk recently appeared on Breakfast Television to make her fabulously Blissful Blueberry Pie, and guess what it feaured? PGX granules! In this recipe, she combines PGX ( PolyGlycopleX®) with Agar Agar and features it in her upcoming book Meals That Heal Inflammation. Fiber is just as good and sometimes better at creating a beautiful jammy or pudding texture, which Julie proves with this recipe, but with an added health kick. PGX granules are an easy solution to inceasing your food's fiber content.

BlueberryPie:
1 cup Water
1 cup Cranberry or Pomegranate Juice
¼ cup Agar Agar Flakes
¼ cup Honey
1 ½ tsp PGX
1 tsp Cinnamon
pinch Salt
3 cups Frozen Wild Blueberries*

* It is important that the berries are small or the agar agar and PGX will simply create a jelly mold around the berries. When the berries are small they mix with the agar agar and PGX to create a jam filling for the pie.

Crust:
2 cups Pecans
½ tsp Cinnamon
pinch Salt
2 Tbs Honey

Cashew Cream Topping
1 cup Raw Cashews
Pinch of Salt
1 tbsp Honey
¾ cup of Water
1 tsp PGX

The secret to this recipe is to work very fast. Prepare all ingredients ahead of cooking the agar agar or it will set before you get it into the pie crust!

Prepare crust first so it is ready to receive the berry mixture:
1) Put pecans in a food processor and whisk until it becomes a fine meal. Add honey, salt and cinnamon and remix. 2) Press pecan mixture into a 9-inch pie plate.

Then prepare the berry mixture:
1) Have all ingredients on hand pre-measured 2) Bring water to a boil, whisk in agar agar, salt, cinnamon and PGX 3) Keep whisking while cooking for 2 minutes on high boil to dissolve and blend ingredients 4) Take pot off the boil and whisk in honey 5) Quickly whisk in blueberries 6) Immediately pour into the pecan crust

Prepare cashew cream topping:
1) In a food processor blend water, salt, cashews and honey for 2 minutes 2) Add PGX and continue to blend for another 2 minutes. 3) Top pie with cashew cream 4) Can be served within 10 minutes of making but it also tastes great chilled. Makes 8 large pie servings.

I get a lot of emails filled with questions about PGX and its effectiveness. Many of these emails are from customers (who have already purchased PGX) looking for motivation and support in their journeys to their new selves. The best motivation? Real success stories. No matter what people say or do for inspiration, the most inspiring and motivating tools are the real stories from real people. In July, I received an email from Katie* telling me her story and struggles with weight loss. It was her 39th birthday that day and she made a decision: "Today is my 39th birthday," she wrote, "and I am determined to be healthier in my forties than I was in my thirties... and twenties!"  At 39 years old, she chose PGX and gave herself the biggest gift of all: the decision to begin a journey to health.

"I'm tired of feeling this way. I'm ready to do it right this time," wrote Katie. With this kind of positive attitude, I knew she would continue to succeed. Three months later I received her update. In those three months, Katie lost 33 lbs and counting! To her own great surprise, the journey has been great and easy. She doesn't starve herself and she doesn't feel deprived like many do when they follow fad diets. Now, she exercises regularly and has begun to enjoy it (one of the biggest hurtles many people face as well). For the first time in ten years, she plans to begin the new year under the 200 lbs. mark and she's well on her way to succeeding! "I have 8 lbs to go and I'm sure I'll get there, maybe even farther!"

Even though she was recently laid off at work and is now searching for a new job, her positive attitude is going strong. With personal setbacks such as hers, it's easy to resort to overindulging in unhealthy habits for comfort. But not Katie: "My weight loss has definitely given me the confidence to [look for a new job]."
