What Are the Benefits of Protein Shakes After a Workout?

I can tell you, without a doubt, that after cycling 139 miles (210km) in a day, a protein shake is a great idea. If you’re not cycling across Canada for charity though, are there really any benefits to including a protein shake in your daily regime? Can a protein shake after a workout help you build muscle, lose weight, or decrease muscle soreness? Could your choice of protein shake actually undo some of the good work you just put in at the gym?

Why You Need Protein

Protein is the main component of muscles, and is essential for the production of hormones, enzymes, immune system cells and even neurotransmitters. Protein is created by the body from amino acids and, although we can synthesize some of these amino acids, essential amino acids have to be acquired through the diet. Without adequate protein we would be in real trouble, and protein shakes are certainly convenient for use after a workout as they provide quick nutrition and hydration to help with muscle growth and repair.

Why Take Protein After a Workout?

Post-workout, too little protein can lead to muscle soreness and fatigue, rather than increased strength and stamina. Taking protein in the first 30 minutes or so after a workout can, however, help the body to begin quickly healing the micro-tears in the muscle, a process which makes muscles stronger over time. The amino acids in a protein shake tend to reach the bloodstream and then the muscles a lot faster than protein bound in food, which is just one reason why protein shakes have become so popular with athletes and gym-goers.

Can I Take Protein at Bedtime?

Protein shakes can also be helpful as a drink before bedtime as some of the amino acids in these drinks are thought to help increase natural levels of growth hormone and thereby help with healing and repair as we sleep, as well as helping to maintain healthy metabolism and bodyweight.

Protein Shakes for Weight Management

Drinking just any old protein shake isn’t going to help with weight loss. In order for that to happen, you need to be exercising those muscles, reducing overall calorie intake and avoiding simple carbohydrates. Unfortunately, some protein shakes contain artificial sweeteners and/or sugars that can sabotage blood glucose control and actually lead to weight gain while increasing muscle soreness and inflammation. Protein shakes designed to help with weight management include those containing soluble fiber, like PolyGlycopleX (PGX). Enjoy this delicous berry summer salad!

What better way to enjoy fresh summer produce than with a simple, tasty recipe?!

My mouth is actually watering for a delicous, homemade salad like this one. And it’s full of healthy ingredients like spinach, avocados, mushrooms, goat cheese and, of course, berries! Lots of berries!

So what’s so great about these ingredients? Well berries are full of antioxidants, powerful substances that can help protect your cells against free radicals. Goat cheese provides some protein, riboflavin and phosphorus. Avocados are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K and dietary fibre. Spinach is also an excellent source of vitamin A, calcium, vitamin C and iron!

How to Control Food Cravings

No matter how good the intentions, it can be difficult to curb cravings for sweet or salty foods. The occasional indulgence is no cause for concern but frequent cravings could be a sign of unbalanced blood sugar. Instead of reaching for a high-calorie sugary treat try these alternatives:

Tasty Tuesday: Easy Fish Fillets

It’s Tasty Tuesday!

When it’s hot outside and you don’t feel like making a big complicated meal, try this easy fish fillet for dinner. Any white fish such as cod, halibut, haddock, or grouper will work well.

We found this great recipe that only calls for lime juice, some light mayo, onion powder, pepper, breadcrumbs, margarine and parsley.

You could add a squeeze of lemon if you’re not a fan of lime. Or combine lemon and lime for a zesty flavour! Approximately 1 1/2 pounds of white fish will yield 4 servings. Half the recipe and you’ve got a nice meal for date night!

Pair it up with some asparagus and rice for a light, healthy and tasty meal. Enjoy!

PGX and Spaghetti Squash!

Try something new! How about spaghetti squash?

Ditch the simple carbs of pasta and get your veggies and fiber!

I love spaghetti. I love pasta. In fact I am a very happy camper when I have all sorts of simple carbs! Bread, cereal, toast, pasta, sweets…you name it! Unfortunately, having a smorgasbord of breads and pasta is really not the best idea for your health or waistline. Luckily I’ve got at least one very awesome alternative to pasta: Spaghetti Squash!

Putting on my infomercial voice: not only is it delicious and nutritious (details at Nutrition Data), it’s super easy to prepare! Here’s my method:

Cut the squash in half lengthwise and remove the seeds.

Place the halves, cut side up, in a large microwavable/oven safe container that has water in it.

Cover it with saran wrap and microwave until the squash is tender. This all depends on the strength of your microwave. It can take anywhere from sx to ten minutes.

When it’s finished cooking, scrape the squash with a fork and it will come apart in spaghetti-like strings.

There are an infinite number of ways to enjoy this squash. Prepare your favourite spaghetti sauce or try something new and mix.

Voila, it’s ready to eat!

Meatballs with PGX Daily!

Looking for a delicious and healthy recipe for dinner?

Try this meatball recipe with PGX Daily Fiber!

The classic spaghetti and meatballs dish that could possibly become a kids favorite dinner dish. Served with a fresh green salad and homemade vinaigrette dressing to make it complete! Remember to choose high fiber pasta and choose to make your own tomato sauce or find organic pasta sauce that is low in sugar, sodium and fat.

Yield: 30-45 meatballs

Prep Time: 15-25 minutes

Total Time: 30-45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Egg
  • ? tablespoon Paprika powder
  • ? tsp Chili powder
  • ? Sage powder
  • ? tablespoon Garlic powder (or 1 medium size clove of crushed garlic)
  • 2-3 tablespoon of Barbeque or marinating sauce (or ketchup)
  • ? tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ? pound lean ground pork, (naturally raised-pastured)
  • ? pound lean ground beef or bison (grass fed, organic)
  • 1//3 cup oatmeal, dry
  • 4 PGX Daily Singles sticks (PGX = 10 grams)

Ingredients (Optional)

  • Replace oatmeal with cooked brown rice (leftover from a previous meal)
  • 1-2 tablespoons of fresh herbs such as basil, cilantro or chives
  • ? cup finely chopped Swiss chard or kale leaves (no stems)
  • Sesame seeds: 1/3 sesame seeds on a flat plate. Once you form the meatball, roll it around the plate to coat it evenly with the seeds

Directions

Line 2 baking tray with tin foil.

Preheat oven to 400? F (204?C).

In a metal mixing bowl, add the first 7 ingredients and mix with a spoon or whisk.

In the same bowl, add the ground pork, beef, and oatmeal and if using PGX Daily Singles, add granules in at this time.

Use your hands to mix the remaining ingredients.

Take approximately 1 tablespoon of meat mixture between your palms and make a ball. Place on the foil lined baking tray. Leave ? inch space between meatballs on the baking sheet.

Bake 15-20 minutes or until the meat begins to slightly brown on the outside. Let cool for 5 minutes so they firm up before serving.

Beef and pork cooked temperature should reach 160-170? F (71.1-76.6? C) or until the meat?s juice runs clear.

And there you have it! Scrumptious and healthy, home-cooked meatballs! Bon appetit!
