When we eat, our bodies break down carbohydrates into glucose, the fuel our bodies consume. The pancreas, located right behind the stomach, releases insulin, a hormone responsible for transportation of glucose to our cells where it is stored as an energy reserve.
But when we consume foods too rich in refined starches or sugars, the pancreas rushes to produce large quantities of insulin required for transporting all that sugar to our cells. The sudden flood of insulin results in washing away more blood sugar than is actually necessary, causing a rapid drop in blood glucose level, which makes us feel hungry again.
